How Did Lop Rabbits Get Their Iconic Floppy Ears?
The Evolutionary Path to Floppy Ears in Lop Rabbits
Rabbits are my favorite animals. I raised and showed them as an adult and learned so much from these furry friends. I wanted to share how lop-eared rabbits came to be and more about them.
A gene mutation in the wild rabbit population came to be some of the most popular rabbit breeds worldwide, making their path quite fascinating.

The History and Origins of Lop Rabbits
Scientists and historians disagree on the origins of lop rabbits, although they have a long history. This gene mutation created their unusual ear shape, believed to have occurred spontaneously in wild rabbits. This was caused by an abnormality that impairs the normal ear cartilage growth found in most rabbits.
The first lop-eared rabbits were seen in ancient art. Egyptian, Roman, and Chinese civilizations painted and sculpted rabbits with long drooping ears. Depictions show that ancient tribes already had lop rabbits around.
Different Breeds of Lop Rabbits
There are 19 different lop breeds worldwide, but only 5 are currently recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA).
American Fuzzy Lop — a small 3–4 pound rabbit with long fur is pictured above. They do require more grooming to ensure their fur stays free of mats.
English Lop — are known for their extremely long ears that drag on the ground. They are a large breed, averaging about 12 pounds. Extra care needs to be given to protect their ears in cold winter months.

French lops have a larger skeletal body type than the other lop breeds. They usually weigh between 10 and 15 pounds.

Holland Lop—When people think of small lop-eared rabbits, they usually refer to the Holland Lop.
Many confuse it with the mini lop, but at least in the U.S.A., Holland Lops are the smallest lop breeds. They are found in a wide variety of beautiful colors and weigh about 4 pounds.

Mini Lop is a bigger rabbit breed than most people expect by the name. They weigh between 4.5 and 6 pounds and are also found in various colors.

A new breed of lop rabbit is being developed and is in the process of being accepted in the ARBA. It’s called the Velveteen Lop rabbit. It is a larger rabbit breed and a cross between the English Lop and Standard Rex rabbits, known for their incredibly dense, plush fur.
Many of the baby lop rabbits have ears that stick straight out horizontally until they are older. Some ears never entirely lay flat. This is affectionately known as ‘helicopter ears’ and doesn’t fail to bring a smile.
