Years ago, I had a pair of bonded chinchilla pets named Bat and Piggy. These small animals can make such great pets I thought I’d write about why chinchillas make great pet animals for those considering them.
Chinchilla pets are usually gentle and social. While they can appear shy at first, with time and patience, they build strong bonds with their owners.
Chinchillas often seek out attention and affection. I found mine to be friendly and sweet. They enjoyed being petted, but mine weren’t big on being held. They were more squirrely and active.
They have very dense and soft fur, which feels amazing. Although they are nocturnal animals, they have active, awake periods during the day. I found them to be more active than hamsters I had in the past.
I’ve known several other chinchilla owners besides myself, and I’ve not known anyone who’s been bitten by them. They also do not have claws or nails that can scratch.
Their lifespan is 8–10 years on average, but some can live as long as 20 years.
Another great thing about chinchillas as pets is that they do not smell. Even their cage remains odor-free as long as it’s cleaned weekly.
Chinchillas are also known for their vocalizations. They use various sounds to communicate their needs and emotions, from chirps and squeaks to purrs and barks.
Each sound has a specific meaning in the chinchilla language. I found these to be darling, cute sounds that are not obnoxious or loud.
Fun Facts about Chinchillas
Did you know chinchillas have the densest fur of terrestrial mammals? Their thick fur shields them from harsh temperatures in their native environment.
Another amusing tidbit is that chinchillas can jump six feet. They adore jumping and hopping about their homes like acrobats.
Common Misconceptions about Chinchillas as Pets
While they are fairly low-maintenance pets, needing less attention than dogs, they require daily connection, mental stimulation, attention, and care.
Another myth is that they are great for small children. Chinchillas need gentle care, are delicate, and need supervision. Mishandled, they can easily be hurt.
Bonding with Your Chinchilla
A healthy connection with your chinchilla requires a deep attachment. It takes effort and care to gain their trust, but it pays off.
Spend time near your chinchilla’s cage talking quietly and giving snacks. Allow them to adjust to your scent and presence. After they become used to you, give your hand to sniff and explore.
Be aware of their body language, and don’t force them into uncomfortable situations. Respect their limits as they build trust over time.
Chinchilla Care and Well-being
Chinchillas need a balanced diet for health. They require high-quality hay, fresh veggies, and specific pellets made for chinchillas.
They also need access to fresh, clean water at all times.
Chinchillas need a large cage to run, leap, and play. A multi-level cage with platforms and ramps suits their energetic temperament. They also need clean bedding at the bottom of the cage.

Chinchillas overheat easily, so keep their habitat cool and ventilated. Do not place their cage in direct sunlight or near heat sources.
Chinchillas need dust baths for healthy fur. Their thick fur retains moisture, so a dust wash removes oils and maintains their coats.
Provide a small bowl of chinchilla dust for frequent grooming several times weekly. They delight in this activity so much, and it never fails to bring a smile to watch them. I’ll link a video below so you can see it. Fun stuff!
Because of dust baths, however, I recommend using a good quality air filter in your home so you aren’t breathing the dust that’s kicked up and reduce the volume in your home overall. It’s good to have one anyway, just for life and environmental toxins in general.

Adorable! Unfortunately, I can't convince my husband that we NEED a chinchilla or two. Darn! But I'll keep your post. Just in case.
What adorable little animals they are. I have found that any animal that is treated with love and given time to feel safe always returns that love and it’s such a strong bond that forms.
